MLive - Mention of Cals Victory over South Christian

Soccer Community,

Just wanted to pass along an article that is currently on MLive.com and may be in the GR Press tonight pertaining to the team’s big win over South this past week…tom

Here’s the link… MLive.com - CHS mention beating SC
--------
South Christian wins battle of No. 1s with OT victory vs. Forest Hills Eastern in boys soccer
Steve Vedder The Grand Rapids Press, October 08, 2009 11:31 p.m.
KENTWOOD -- There may have been a few moans after surrendering what could have been a heart-breaking goal, but Ben Honeycutt thought there was too much at stake to pout.

After South Christian's soccer team had given up a stunning game-tying goal to Forest Hills Eastern with just 7.2 seconds left in regulation, Honeycutt said his teammates refused to let the goal wreck Thursday's showdown between two teams ranked No. 1 in the state.

Honeycutt scored the game winner with 6:12 left in overtime to give the Sailors a 2-1 win against the Hawks. The goal came after a clutch goal from FHE's Mitchell Rosendall that tied the contest in the waning seconds of regulation.

The win leaves South Christian (13-1-1, 9-1) in the driver's seat for an O-K Gold title,but the Sailors might lose their No. 1-ranking in Division 3 after being upset by Caledonia on Tuesday. The Hawks (13-3, 10-2) entered the game ranked No. 1 in Division 2.

"We didn't get down," Honeycutt said of his game winner, which barely found the inside of the left post from more than 20 yards away.

South Christian coach Bruce Huttenga added: "It was a tough goal to give up. We moaned a little in the huddle (after regulation), but we came together.

"It was huge. I watched every head go down," Huttenga said of the tying goal. "We kept saying we have to get the aggressiveness back and take it to them. We played well in overtime when we could have layed down. That was incredible."

Hawks coach Paul Rosenbrook said FHE didn't get emotional lift he expected in the extra session from such a crucial goal.

"We certainly had hoped for more," he said. "We certainly didn't come out with the same urgency as South Christian. We fought hard, but we came out slow in overtime. Part of it was tired legs, but most had to do with South Christian picking itself up."

It looked like a goal by the Sailors' Ben Kadau with 6:23 left in the game might hold up until Rosendall's score from in front of the South Christian net tied the game.

South Christian can win an O-K Gold outright title by beating Hastings on Tuesday and Wayland on Thursday.

"It was a tale of two halves," Huttenga said. "They had a lot of possession time in the first half. We needed to possess the ball and we didn't in the first half. We finally started to do it in the second half, and when we do that, we're dangerous."

Congratulation - Beating SC & Coach Lincoln Award!

Soccer Community,

Congratulation to varsity soccer team on a huge win last night against one of our biggest rivals! From a spectators perspective it was awesome to see the young men give it their all (despite the conditions) for 90 minutes and come out on the winning side of a hard fought match.

Additional congratulation goes out to Coach Lincoln for receiving PNC’s Performance Award which is one of the most prestigious honors within his company. It’s my understanding that over 1100 people are nominated each year and only a handful are selected. Here’s a brief overview provided from PNC’s website:

... PNC's Performance Awards are the highest honor one of our employees can receive. They're rare: Only 100 extraordinary individuals have won Performance Awards since we started the program in 1993. These employees are known throughout PNC, and that's the way it should be, in our thinking: Each of them was nominated by their employee peers using very stringent criteria, and then carefully evaluated. Each was announced in an annual ceremony to the whole company via satellite broadcast.

Performance Award winners represent all that is best about our company, and embody the values we promote: Unparalleled customer service and satisfaction, a high-energy work ethic, leadership and teamwork, willingness to improve operations, and community involvement…

Today there will be a film crew at practice today capturing Coach Lincoln doing one of his life’s passions.

Again let’s congratulate the boys for their win last night and Coach Lincoln for his efforts and dedication both on and off the field.

Housekeeping Items!

Athletes & Parents,

As we head into the home stretch of the season Coach Lincoln wanted to me to pass along a couple of “important” housekeeping items:

  1. Ottawa Hills Varsity away game this Thursday (10/8) is schedule to start at ~5:30pm
  2. Strict enforcement of MHSAA uniform policy is going to be enforced over the next couple weeks. Specifically player must wear the same color uniforms including undergarments. That being said, here’s what Coach Lincoln has set as the acceptable undergarment standards:
  • Compression or Loose Tops – White
  • Compression Shorts – White
  • Hats – Plain Black (no letting or strips or markings at all)
  • Gloves – Plan Black (Brand labels are fine)
  • Sock – Must be the ones purchased at the beginning of the season
Get healthy, several of the athletes are sick or injured so let’s make sure proper attention is given to these issues

Coach Lincoln will be also addressing these items with the athletes over the next several days.

Thanks
tom

    It's Official....The 2009 Season Begins

    Grettings Cal Scots Soccer Community,

    What do you get when you put 2 coaches and 20 high schoolers in a small college ghost town consisiting of 4 soccer fields with the ultimate
    hangout being a Total gas station? Answer: A lot of focus on soccer.

    Well soccer season is under way for the Cal Boys Soccer Program. We had out first retreat this weekend as we traditionally do to Olivet College. Not much going on but an old car parade and soccer scrimmages. We had a great first week of camp and accomplished many things.

    Overall, we went 3-0-2. The team bonding and fun we had will set us up great for our August 12th tryout date. I was really impressed with our defense mounted by seniors Blake Higley, Dylan Avery, and Robert Otterbein. Another major contributor was Junior Evan (the tasmanian devil) Maczka. The teams confidence rose the more they played and got time together. Our midfield had many challenges put out to them by the coaching staff and responded well. Seniors Nate Deboer and David Otten and Junior Mitchell Reed won many balls and played extremely tough logging a lot of minutes. Forwards were led by Dale Domer and Sam Stearns. Dale had 4 goals and Sam contributed important assists to lead the way. Jake Wunderink converted 3 goals on very few touches as a sophomore. The additions of sophomore Luke Bestrom and Senior David Otten on Saturday really gave us an added lift.

    Here are the results from the weekend:
  • 1-0 Win vs Eaton Rapids (Goal by Nate Deboer, assist Sam Stearns)
  • 5-0 Win vs Haslett (Goals by Jason Wendt, Dale Domer (2), and Jake Wunderink (2)
  • 0-0 Tie vs Mason
  • 2-2 Tie vs Cadillac (Goals by Dale Domer and Jake Wunderink, assist by Mike Birkmeier)
  • 2-0 Win vs Grand Ledge (Goals by Nate Deboer and Dale Domer, assits by David Otten)
  • Blake Higley 4 shutouts, .40 GA per game.

    Here are a couple of reminders:
  • Get your boots broken in! Do you need new boots? Do you have new boots? Don't enter the season with a shoe issue!
  • Attend all 6 remaining training sessions for 2 weeks until tryouts (speed/strength, drop in, and saturday morning runs).
  • Adhere to new diet guideleines...no fried foods, no pop, no fast foods. Pizza weeks will be allowed on discretionary basis,
    for now no pizza!
  • Always bring running shoes, water bottle, soccer ball, and soccer gear to every practice session.
  • Rest, elevate and ice, eat right, and work out. Gain the right kind of weight!

    And finally, here are some key dates:
  • Tryout time and place: Wednesday August 12th, 8-11am at the practice field behind CHS
  • Mandatory Champion of Character Meeting at Davenport August 12th in evening, meet at CHS for bus ride time TBD
  • First Scrimmages: Tuesday August 18th at Calvin College Invite. First scrimmage at 8am.
  • Soccer Kickoff Meeting: Mandatory for Varsity parents and coaches only, August 19th or 20th. Place TBD.
  • First matches: Saturday August 22nd at Portage Invite. First game vs Plainwell at 9am.

    GO SCOTS!

    Soccer Parent and Players,

    The Caledonia Boys Soccer program has always been committed to achieving excellence. As the program has been preparing for the 2009 CHS 6v6 Summer Soccerfest it has become apparent we wouldn’t achieve excellence, so we are cancelling the event for this year.

    You’re probably asking why, what’s changed, etc. So let me provide some insight:

    1. Current economic conditions have required a couple of teams opt out this year;
    2. A couple of teams have decided to take a different direction with regards to off-season training;
    3. Each year we evaluate the return on our investment, such as;
    • Securing the highest level of competition for all teams and more specifically the CHS program;
    • Amount of dollar raised for the CHS program
    • Feedback from CHS Coaches, Players and Parents

    After considering all the above, Coach Lincoln thought it would be a great opportunity for the CHS program to consider other alternatives.

    One alternative being considered is to secure a “top-notch” trainer that would work with the boys in the CHS program. The training would focus on technique and tactics through individual drills and small-side activities. Find below the details:

    JV/Freshman Training:

    • Day/Dates: Wednesdays; June 10th, 17th, 24th and July 8th
    • Time: 5:00pm to 6:30pm
    • Location: Behind Caledonia High School – Soccer Practice Field
    • “Estimated” Cost per Player: $20-$30

    Varsity Training:

    • Day/Dates: Wednesdays; June 10th, 17th, 24th and July 8th
    • Time:6:30pm to 8:00pm
    • Location: Behind Caledonia High School – Soccer Practice Field
    • “Estimated” Cost per Player: $20-$30

    Here are a couple of other things to consider;

    • depending on participation the cost may change;
    • and if you can’t make a session the price is still the same

    So we need each of you to let us know if you are interested in this alternative training by Tuesday, June 2, 2009.

    I’ll send a note out once letting you know of the decision after getting everyone’s response.

    Thanks,

    Tom Bestrom – 6v6 Event Coordinator

    Quick Update - Girls District Game & CHS Boys Successes

    Boys Soccer Program and Parents,

    As we look to continually build a strong soccer program at CHS, it’s important we support and recognize our athletes.

    In that spirit, I just wanted to send out a reminder pertaining to the CHS Girls opening round of district play tonight and also let you know about some CHS Boy’s recent successes.

    CHS Girls - 1st Round District Game:

  • Tuesday May 26th, 6:00pm at CHS Soccer Stadium - will likely be their toughest game in districts. GOOD LUCK LADY SCOTS! WE ARE BEHIND YOU!

    CHS Boys – Success on the Field:

  • This past weekend at the Canton Cup, Dylan Avery, Sam Stearns and Dale Domer were part of the Grand Rapids Crew Junior team that won the U17 White division.
  • Luke Bestrom will be playing in the U15 State Cup Finals this coming Saturday, May 30th at 3:00pm in Lansing, MI.

    Thanks and let’s continue to “support and recognize” our athletes.

    In-Coming Freshman Soccer Players

    Good morning,

    I want to thank you all for signing up to potentially be a member of the CHS soccer program in the fall. I want to follow up on some of the information that Tom sent out last week.

    The summer 6v6 is a great opportunity that we would love to have all of you participate in. We need a few parent volunteers to serve as coaches for teams. Let us know if you are interested ASAP and we will get you the details. Players, we need you to sign up to play also so we know how many teams we will need. Games are every Wednesday night in June. More information can be found at http://caledonia6v6.blogspot.com

    Also, in the next few weeks we will be forwarding information regarding our weekly conditioning program. This is a 30-45 minute workout session that we run twice a week throughout the summer, up to tryouts.

    Finally, tryouts for freshman and JV players will be held together from August 12-14. They are tentatively scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. More details will follow.

    Feel free to let me know if you have any questions,
